KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 3: The Parliament will not convene during the Emergency period, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.

According to the national daily The Star, the Federal Cabinet has advised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah that there will be no Parliament sitting and any decision on Parliament sitting will be decided by the Federal Cabinet.

“Now the Cabinet has advised the King that there is no Parliament sitting. That is the situation now,” he was quoted as saying during a press conference at Putrajaya.

He explained that the decision not to convene a Parliament sitting in the near future was made based on science and data of the Covid-19 transmission as well as the Federal Constitution.

He revealed that there are some MPs who are in the high-risk groups — 77 MPs aged between 61 and 69, and another 19 MPs were aged between 70 and 79 while there are four MPs who are aged 80 and above.

Following the death of Batu Sapi MP Datuk Liew Vui Keong and Gerik MP Datuk Hasbullah Osman last year, there are 220 MPs in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat at present.

Apart from the MPs, each MP would have at least a group of three officers at the Parliament during a sitting, Takiyuddin stressed.

In the meantime, the Emergency proclamation is until August 1. — DayakDaily
