KUCHING, Jan 30: Kuching South City Hall’s (MBKS) has taken immediate steps to address the risk of flash floods including by working together with relevant agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).
“We are working closely with DID and other relevant parties to ensure the drainage system functions properly,” MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng told reporters after receiving a friendly visit from the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his Chinese New Year open house today.
Wee also urged all parties, including the community and local leaders, to play their roles in addressing the issue of flash floods in the area.
“This is not just the council’s responsibility but (community and local leaders) as Sarawakians, everyone needs to play a role,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said MBKS and his council members are ready and on standby to assist in the flooding situation here.
He added that with the King tide heading in and the relentless rainfall, the team is currently closely monitoring the situation on the ground, especially in high-risk low-lying areas such as Kampung Tabuan Melayu area.
“We have advised our members to be on standby, even on a public holiday like today.
“If there are any assistance needed, we are ready to lend a helping hand,” he said.
The council is also keeping a close watch on several project sites, including the Tanah Putih area, which has previously experienced recurring flash floods.
