KUCHING, Aug 6: SACOFA’s RM185 million Network Modernisation Programme has reached the 50 per cent completion milestone, with 365 out of 732 telecommunications sites upgraded and ready for service as the State moves towards a more resilient digital backbone.
Speaking during SACOFA’s 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner here on Wednesday (Aug 5), Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said another 367 sites were currently undergoing modernisation, with the programme on track for completion in 2027.
“The progress recorded as of July 2026 reflects SACOFA’s steady commitment to delivering a future-ready network that will continue to support Sarawak’s digital transformation,” he said.
The Network Modernisation Programme, which began in November 2025, uses advanced technologies including Optical Transport Network systems, artificial intelligence-driven network intelligence and next-generation routing capabilities to strengthen Sarawak’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Upon completion, the programme will increase SACOFA’s overall network capacity from 1.6 terabits per second to 7.2 terabits per second, while improving individual site capacity from 10 gigabits per second to 100 gigabits per second.
Julaihi, who is also SACOFA chairman, said the upgrades would enhance network performance, reliability and scalability to meet growing demands from businesses, government services and communities across Sarawak.
“These advancements require more than increased connectivity. They require a modern, resilient and high-capacity telecommunications network capable of supporting the growing demands of a digital economy and ensuring that Sarawak remains competitive in an increasingly connected world,” he said.
He said the company would continue strengthening its role as the State’s telecommunications infrastructure backbone through collaborations with industry partners to expand connectivity and support next-generation technologies. — DayakDaily
