KUCHING, Dec 2: Sarawak’s weather conditions are suitable for growing acacia trees to produce biomass as an alternative solution for energy production.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said acacia can be planted block-by-block for sustainability.
“It can be harvested every three to four years. If planted in a block, it will turn into a circular economy,” he said when attending a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Acacia Power Sdn Bhd and NextChem SPA streamed live via Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook page today.
Abang Johari said that Sarawak is also exporting Napier grass that can be harvested every three months to be produced as pallets for biomass.
Currently, he said that the export is intended for the United Kingdom (UK) which is shifting its biomass not only from trees but also from grass.
On the MoU, Abang Johari said he believes the combination of experiences from both parties can result in the innovation of new technology to improve productivity and meet the challenges of global climate change. — DayakDaily
