KUCHING, May 18: A Sarawakian scientist is making waves in the global tech scene by designing a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chip at a British government-owned lab in Cardiff, United Kingdom.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in his speech at the ‘Sambutan Hari Pekerja Tahun 2025 Peringkat Sarawak’ held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here today, revealed that the Sarawakian is now the head of the Sarawak semiconductor unit in that lab and is developing new technological discoveries.

“There are many chips in a phone. One of those chips, made by our very own Sarawakian, is powered by AI.

“If there is an electrical issue, that small AI-powered chip can solve the problem in just one-tenth of a second. Who made it? It turns out, it was a Sarawakian who invented this new chip,” he said.

Abang Johari further shared, “I went there together with scientists from the British government, and one of them told me, ‘Your talent is really very bright’.”

He noted that the AI-powered chip developed by the Sarawakian is now in demand by global companies such as General Electric and Siemens.

“Who designed it? A Sarawakian. Long hair, dressed like Bill Gates, a brilliant young man from Kampung Tabuan. This shows that our people are highly skilled at the international level,” he said.

The Premier highlighted he has informed the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) of the innovation and plans to launch it once Sarawak secures international intellectual property (IP) rights.

He added that this achievement proves Sarawakians, when given the right training, are equal to international talents. — DayakDaily
