SANTUBONG, July 24: Sarawakian dancer Elwyn Jung is eyeing two gold medals at the 26th World Championships of Performing Arts 2023 (WCOPA) or ‘Official Talent Olympics’ held in Los Angeles, California of the United States (US) taking place from July 28-Aug 6.
The 18-year-old Kuching-born athlete said he is part of the 11-member Malaysian contingent, which would depart from Kuala Lumpur for the competition on July 27.
Another Sarawakian dancer participating in the competition is Sibu-born violinist Imran Azim Iskandar.
“I will be participating in the dance solo category and contest in six genres, namely contemporary, lyrical, ethnic/folklore, jazz, musical theatre, and ballet, for the open category.
“I was selected into the Malaysian contingent in February this year, and I have been training since then,” he told reporters at Damai Beach Resort today.
Jung is a dancer from The Dance Academy Kuching (TDAK). It will be his first time participating in an international event.
Previously, he was crowned the grand champion for the 1st National Malaysia Chinese Dance Competition (CDE) in 2021.
Earlier, Jung met the Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, for the handing over of the Sarawak flag.
Also present were Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau and Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) chief executive officer Dayang Mariana Abang Bolhassan. — DayakDaily
