KUCHING, July 5: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg remains unfazed by the postponed creation of 17 new State seats, declaring absolute confidence that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will secure a dominant majority regardless of the final constituency count.
According to a TVS report, the Sarawak government has accepted the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to postpone the proposed expansion of the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) until next year.
“The State government understands the EC’s position. This redelineation exercise must be carried out transparently and legally to guarantee that all proposals undergo thorough and proper scrutiny,” he told reporters after officiating the funding handover ceremony for the construction of the Sri Satok Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) building here today.
While the State government has already passed the necessary legislation to increase the number of DUN seats from 82 to 99, the Premier emphasised that implementation must ultimately follow the formal processes managed by the EC. This includes putting the proposed boundaries on public display to gather essential feedback.
The redelineation review is expected to take at least six to seven months before it can be fully finalised.
He noted that if the implementation timeline becomes too tight, the government will re-examine when to call the next state election in relation to the expiration of its current mandate.
Despite the administrative delay, the Premier remains unperturbed about GPS’s political grip, maintaining that the ruling coalition is fully prepared to secure a commanding majority regardless of whether they contest the existing 82 seats or the expanded 99 seats. — DayakDaily
