KUCHING, June 20: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), in collaboration with Worldview Climate Solutions (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (WCS), organised a two-day community dialogue on the Blue Carbon Project at the community halls of Rumah (Rh) Preddy Tungu, Mupong, and Kampung Sebena on June 18 and 19, respectively.
According to a press release, the dialogue facilitated crucial discussions on advancing blue carbon initiatives and sustainable coastal ecosystem management within the project area, bringing together the government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and community stakeholders.
Blue carbon refers to the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses, and tidal marshes.
“The dialogue focused on the critical role of blue carbon ecosystems, specifically mangroves, in carbon sequestration and climate resilience.
“This engagement platform allowed deliberation on frameworks and community engagement strategies to enhance blue carbon conservation and restoration,” said the press release.

The dialogue enables direct interaction, allowing community members to express their opinions, concerns, and ideas, thereby ensuring their involvement in decision-making and facilitating a transparent discussion of potential benefits and challenges.
“Key highlights include STIDC and WCS’s commitment to sustainable solutions that mitigate climate change while supporting biodiversity and local livelihoods.
“The importance of cooperation among all stakeholders for the blue carbon project’s success and scalability was emphasised.”
The dialogue concluded with a call for sustained cooperation among all stakeholders to effectively implement comprehensive blue carbon strategies for the Sarawak Blue Carbon Initiative (SBCI).
The carbon study permit (CSP) for the project was received on November 11, 2024, and an agreement was signed on November 13. — DayakDaily
