KUCHING, Aug 14: The Sarawak government’s RM200,000 funding to the 10th Malaysia Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (MICSS) Ball Games Championship 2023 will cover one-third of the organising costs.
MICSS organising chairman Datuk Richard Wee said this shows the Sarawak government’s support for Chinese independent schools in the region.
On top of that, he said, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah had personally coordinated with several departments to assist during the championship from Aug 27 to 31.
At a press conference held at Bangunan Baitulmakmur II yesterday (Aug 13), Abdul Karim said Sarawak welcomes all 1,700 individuals including teachers, athletes and their family members who are expected to visit Kuching for the game.
“In addition to making everyone feel at home, we also want to take this opportunity to further promote the tourist attractions and authentic foods in Sarawak while boosting the economy,” he added.
The opening ceremony will be held at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) on Aug 27, officiated by Abdul Karim who is also Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.
Meanwhile, the closing ceremony on Aug 31 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) is expected to be graced by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Throughout the five-day tournament, various locations around Kuching will host four sports being contested: basketball at the Sungai Apong Basketball Court and Chung Hua Middle Schools No.1 and No. 3; volleyball at Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School; badminton at the Sarawak Badminton Association; and table tennis at SJK Chung Hua No. 3. — DayakDaily
