BINTULU, Feb 1: The Sarawak government will carry out an audit to restore infrastructure damaged by the floods that hit several parts of the State once the weather improves, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said this during a press conference today at the Bintulu Civic Centre temporary evacuation centre (PPS).
Abang Johari said the audit will be carried out as weather conditions in Sarawak are expected to improve in the coming week, and the results of the audit will be discussed in a Cabinet meeting.
“It is also to evaluate the situation and work out our approach to assist. Most important is restoring public infrastructure so that villages are connected as some roads were cut off (due to floods and landslides), which we have to rebuild.
“There are also other areas affected, including schools, which we have to restore,” he said.
At the same time, he said the Sarawak government is prepared to allocate additional funds to aid in flood recovery efforts on top of the RM10 million allocated to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
“If RM10 million is not enough, then we will allocate more according to what is needed. We will evaluate the situation, and hopefully, we can help those affected,” he said to reporters.
Meanwhile, he praised elected representatives who went out of their way to monitor the floods in their respective areas and check on the welfare of their constituents, as well as the departments and agencies involved in round-the-clock disaster relief efforts. — DayakDaily
