BINTULU, Feb 1: The Sarawak government will provide assistance to the health authorities to monitor the spread of waterborne diseases following the floods that have plagued the State, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“During floods, we are also scared of diseases spreading, especially those that are easily transmitted through water.

“We will provide assistance to the health authorities to review and monitor our community’s health,” he said.

He said this during a press conference today at the Bintulu Civic Centre temporary evacuation centre (PPS).

Meanwhile, he stressed that the flood in Sarawak is not due to infrastructure issues but climate change, describing the floods that have affected almost all areas in Sarawak as ‘extraordinary’ due to the large amount of rainfall over the past few days.

He also drew parallels between the floods in Sarawak and the wildfires in California in the United States, attributing both disasters to climate change.

“This is what’s happening, and for us in Sarawak, we will try to help those affected. With those registered at the PPS, we will try to evaluate what assistance we can give them,” he said. — DayakDaily
