KUCHING, April 21: The Sarawak government has approved an application to upgrade and expand the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), he said that the application was submitted by Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang and Muara Tuang assemblyman Dato’ Idris Buang to provide more comfortable and conducive facilities for the use of the local community.
“The upgrade project is important as the hall is often used for large-scale events including community programmes, festive celebrations, official functions, and many more,” he said during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house organised by Rubiah on Sunday (April 20).
The existing civic centre can accommodate up to 2,500 people at a time and was the twelfth to be established in Sarawak. It was officially opened on March 5, 1995.
On February 21, the Sarawak Tourist Guides Association (SkTGA) urged the restoration of the Kuching Civic Centre.
Following this, on February 27, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressed broader concerns about the state of civic centres throughout Sarawak.
He stated that the government must reassess their purpose and explore alternative roles for these spaces. — DayakDaily
