KUCHING, Feb 17: Sarawak is strengthening ties with Commonwealth business leaders in key economic sectors—particularly renewable energy, digital economy, and aerospace— as part of ongoing efforts to foster international investment and technological advancement.
In a press release issued today, InvestSarawak said this followed a courtesy call by Lord Hugo Swire, deputy chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), to Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan today.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, which InvestSarawak coordinated, Swire commended Sarawak’s ambitious vision for sustainable economic development, highlighting its leadership in green hydrogen, digital transformation, and the semiconductor industry.
“Sarawak is demonstrating remarkable ambition in fostering investment across multiple industries. From renewable energy and oil and gas to education and cybersecurity, the State is actively positioning itself as a dynamic investment hub,” said Swire.
He added that CWEIC is committed to strengthening collaboration with Sarawak, following up on discussions initiated during CWEIC chairman Lord Jonathan Marland’s visit last month.
Meanwhile, the press release added that a delegation of Sarawakian businesses is set to visit the United Kingdom during the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit in April this year, further strengthening international collaboration.
Awang Tengah, who is Minister for International Trade and Investment Sarawak, welcomed the collaboration and underscored Sarawak’s readiness to work with partners in the UK to expand opportunities in these sectors.
“The UK has long been a valued trade and investment partner for Sarawak, and we look forward to deepening our collaboration, especially in high-value industries such as aerospace, renewable energy, and digital innovation,” he said.
Swire’s working visit included a tour of the Petros multi-fuel station at Darul Hana, Kuching.
SEDC Energy briefed him on Sarawak’s hydrogen economy and the region’s broader ambition to export green hydrogen internationally.
In addition, Swire met with SMD Semiconductor’s leadership, including CEO Shariman Jalil, via a video call to discuss advancements in semiconductor technology and the potential for UK-Sarawak partnerships in the high-tech manufacturing sector. — DayakDaily
