KUCHING, Aug 17: Sarawak remains committed to amending the Sarawak Building Ordinance 1994 to ensure building laws meet current needs, with new requirements including the Green Building Index (GBI), electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in buildings.
According to a TVS news report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the amendments would not only emphasise environmental sustainability but also prioritise safety and the quality of life of building occupants.
“Now we are talking about new buildings. We want the Green Building Index, but there is no ordinance to implement it.
“The same goes for EVs, there is no specific law yet. If you buy an electric vehicle, how do you charge it, who provides the facility, and how do you pay? It’s impossible to run an extension cable from the 10th floor down to the parking lot.
“All these ordinances, including fire safety, need to be amended. It is a big change and hopefully will be tabled at the next State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting,” he told reporters after attending the launching of Canning Residences Tabuan Jaya at a hotel here yesterday (Aug 16).
Dr Sim stressed that all stakeholders, including developers, contractors, and architects, must familiarise themselves with the new provisions to avoid confusion in the construction process once the changes are enforced.
He added that comprehensive understanding of the amendments is crucial to ensure all parties play their role in supporting the Sarawak government’s aspirations towards sustainable development. — DayakDaily
