KUCHING, July 10: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for the creation of a unified ASEAN hydrogen certification platform as part of a broader push for stronger regional cooperation to accelerate Asia’s transition to a clean energy economy.

Delivering his keynote address titled ‘Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond’ at the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 conference in Tokyo today, Abang Johari stressed that hydrogen economy success hinges on international collaboration.

“We must move towards a common policy framework, shared standards and coordinated investment.

“Sarawak is already developing its own hydrogen certification platform, and this could be the starting point for a wider ASEAN-level collaboration,” he said, as reported by TVS.

He proposed three practical areas for regional cooperation: the development of a joint hydrogen certification framework, co-investment in infrastructure such as export terminals, storage facilities and conversion plants, and regional knowledge and talent sharing.

“Beyond physical infrastructure, we must also build an ecosystem of skills and expertise.

“Joint research and development, training programmes and innovation clusters will help fast-track our collective energy transition,” he noted.

Abang Johari affirmed that Sarawak is positioning itself to become a global player in the hydrogen economy, guided by its long-term Hydrogen Economy Roadmap.

“Hydrogen is not a race to be won, but a journey to be shared, one in which developing regions like Sarawak can contribute meaningfully to global carbon reduction while generating jobs, partnerships and opportunities,” he added.

He urged all nations and stakeholders across ASEAN to work together in shaping a future hydrogen economy that benefits the entire region.
