KUCHING, Nov 25: Sarawak aims to establish four carbon storage sites by 2030, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari said, through Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), the carbon storage sites will drive Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) innovations to decarbonise key industries and contributing to the region’s net-zero goals.
“In February this year, Petros signed a Storage Site Agreement with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) through its subsidiary CCS Ventures, and Japanese Consortium Parties for the M3 depleted field offshore Sarawak.
“In July 2024, Petros launched the Sarawak Bid Round, offering three carbon storage sites with an estimated total storage capacity of approximately 1,000 million tonnes (MT) CO2. This initiative reinforces Sarawak’s leadership in CCUS, creating new opportunities for international partnerships,” he said when officiating at the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) Summit held at Sheraton Kuching Hotel here today.
He added that those efforts align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), launched last year, which identifies CCUS as one of the six critical energy transition levers expected to create over 200,000 jobs and about RM250 billion in gross value for the next 30 years. — DayakDaily
