Suspect in Sibu baby dumping case under investigation for statutory rape of 14yo mother of child

SIBU, Oct 30: The male suspect in the baby dumping case yesterday is also being investigated for statutory rape of the 14-year-old girl, who is believed to be the mother of the newborn.

The police have detained a 44-year-old man and the teen girl following the discovery of the abandoned baby yesterday.

“The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code. The suspect is an acquaintance of the girl’s father,” said Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili today.

Zulkipli added that the case is also being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth with intent to abandon, a crime punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine.

The baby boy, weighing 1.48 kilogrammes, was found in a container near a garbage site on Jalan Tong Sang by a member of the public yesterday morning

The baby is believed to have been born within the past 24 hours, with the umbilical cord still attached.

The baby’s mother is currently receiving medical care at Sibu Hospital.

Earlier, the male suspect had been remanded for six days by the Magistrate’s Court today following a prosecution request. — DayakDaily
