KUCHING, May 3: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) will bid to reclaim its traditional seat of Bawang Assan in the next Sarawak Election, says its women chief Kho Teck Wan.
She stated this despite the fact that the incumbent assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh — who was the former president of the recently dissolved Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) — is now a member of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
“Although PSB may have been dissolved and its members have joined PDP en-bloc, as far as our (SUPP) grassroots is concerned, the memory of fighting vigorously to counter those unjustified statements made by PSB against Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is still fresh in mind.
“Everyone has to understand that it will take time for our grassroots to acknowledge that the opposition they fought fiercely against are now supporting GPS.
“Although the former PSB representative from Bawang Assan is now a member of PDP, SUPP will certainly bid to defend its traditional seat Bawang Assan during the next State election,” she said in a statement today.
Kho who is also the political secretary to Premier of Sarawak, further noted that both SUPP and another GPS component party —PBB, have a long history of working together in Bawang Assan constituency to fight against other political rivals, which included Democratic Action Party (DAP) and PSB.
On behalf of SUPP, she expressed gratitude and appreciation on the comradeship and unwavering support shown by PBB Bawang Assan Branch chairman Romeo Christopher Tegong on the latter’s stance to support and continue working with SUPP in the next State election.
“Bawang Assan has been lacking in development funds after falling into the hands of the opposition. Yet continuous development is the way to counter the ever increasing cost of living caused by the weak Malaysian ringgit.
“Therefore, in the spirit of one (united) GPS, we support PBB Bawang Assan’s stance in calling for all youths and women to work together and give their full support to the GPS candidate in the coming State election so we can fight for the development fund and change the fate of people in Bawang Assan,” she added. — DayakDaily
