KUCHING, Dec 20: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Pelawan branch is ready to assist the Sibu Resident Office to help flood victims.
Its secretary Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the decision was made in view of the seriousness of the flood situation in Peninsular Malaysia.
He said, referring to the weather forecast report prepared by Malaysian Meteorological Department, Sarawak is expected to experience continuous thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and strong winds.
“So, to prepare ourselves, SUPP Pelawan team has decided to form a natural disaster management committee to provide food aid or necessity supplies to affected families.
“If anything happens in Sarawak, particularly in Sibu, we will prepare our branch to assist,” he said in a virtual press conference broadcast live on his Facebook page today.
Tiang, who is also the SUPP Youth chief and newly-elected N54 Pelawan assemblyman, further pledged that the team will wait for the Sibu Resident Office’s orders or directives in helping the authorities.
He added that it is important for Sarawak not to be complacent that the monsoon season only affects Peninsular Malaysia.
Tiang won the recently-concluded State election with a 100-majority.
He was involved in a five-cornered fight against Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) David Wong Kee Woan who secured 4,313 votes, Dr Low Chong Nguan of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) with 3,757 votes, Tiew Yen Houng of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) with 3,146 votes, and Janet Loh of Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) with 302 votes. ― DayakDaily
