SIBU, Sept 30: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) needs to give way to the younger generation to lead to ensure the party’s longevity, says its president, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Dr Sim, who is the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, stressed that positions do not last forever.

“Leaders like Datuk Michael Tiang (Pelawan assemblyman), Joseph Chieng (Bukit Assek assemblyman), Datuk Robert Lau (Dewan Negara Senator), and Kevin Lau (SUPP Bawang Assan Community Development Team chairman)—they are young leaders who will replace me and others.

“SUPP should be ready to give way to young people to ensure the survival of the party because positions do not last forever,” he said during a luncheon in conjunction with the party’s 65th anniversary at a local hotel here yesterday (Sept 29).

Dr Sim further called on the party members to avoid becoming ‘anai-anai’ (termites), which could jeopardise the party’s unity.

“The attitude of tolerance and unity, considering that this party belongs to all party members, will guarantee that our party will continue to remain relevant.

“SUPP is already 65 years old, and until now, it still exists because we all have a sense of responsibility and give undivided support towards this party,” he added.

Also present were SUPP vice president Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting, treasurer-general Senator Datuk Robert Lau, Youth chief Datuk Michael Tiang, and Women chief Kho Teck Wan. — DayakDaily
