KUCHING, Nov 21: The Sarawak Budget 2024 demonstrates the State government’s prudence and responsibility in managing financial affairs and investing in the future for a developed and high-income State.
Dato Sim Kiang Chiok hailed the budget tabled by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) yesterday (Nov 20) as “a commendable budget for all Sarawakians”.
In a press statement, the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Stakan chairman said the budget allocates funds wisely, leveraging increased income from oil, gas, and various industries.
“The government has proactively invested in infrastructure, traditional and new economies, new technology, green initiatives, and research and development, ensuring sustainable growth for Sarawak.
“Notably, the allocation of RM900 million for the initial implementation of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) is a game-changer for mobility in Kuching, Serian, and Samarahan, creating a more integrated and productive modern zone,” he said.
Sim, who is the head of Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) Kuching Branch, lauded the decision to invest now rather than to save as strategic considering potential inflation and poor exchange rates; adding that the approach is crucial if Sarawak wanted to catch up with Peninsular Malaysia’s development.
He further praised the budget for addressing societal needs, such as providing affordable housing projects and assistance for students from B40 households, as well as catering to the elderly, vulnerable, and those with special needs.
“Sarawak is fortunate to have elected a responsible State government with a Premier committed to inclusive growth, ensuring that nobody is left behind,” he said. — DayakDaily
