KUCHING, Aug 22: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok has demanded Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang apologise after allegedly blaming non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras as being the root of corruption.
He described Abdul Hadi’s remark as a terrible statement and unbecoming of a national leader who is part of the government in Putrajaya.
“Leaders in Putrajaya should be leaders for all Malaysians and to alienate the majority population of non-Muslims and non-Bumiputera as ‘corrupted’ is totally unacceptable and a gross injustice to more than one-third of the population of Malaysia.
“We demand that Abdul Hadi apologises for this uncouth and distasteful remark,” he said in a statement today.
Kiang Chiok further said that corruption is a disease, and like any disease, it doesn’t discriminate.
He also stressed that there had been people from all walks of life, including famous leaders from the Muslim community and Bumiputera that have been found guilty of corruption, and so have leaders and personalities from non-Muslim communities.
“Labeling and isolating other ethnicities are similar to the work of Adolf Hitler (German dictator) and the Nazis, and so we are asking PAS, do you intend to take the road of white supremacists like Donald Trump (former United States president)?
“We take great relief that we have good and sensible leadership in Sarawak in the form of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and thankfully, this sort of sentiment will be very small or probably non-existent in Sarawak.
“Nevertheless, we must always nip the problem in the bud before it becomes a problem for our unity and prosperity,” he emphasised.
In a Facebook post dated Aug 20, Abdul Hadi said corruption stemmed from those who reaped profit through illegal means.
“In fact, the majority of those involved in ruining the country’s politics and economy were non-Muslims and non-Bumiputeras,” said Abdul Hadi. — DayakDaily
