KUCHING, Sept 28: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) publicity and information secretary Adam Yii Siew Sang calls on AirAsia and other major airlines to set a ceiling price on airfare to reduce the cost burden on the people.
Yii, in a statement today, said due to the significant reduction in flights by Malaysia Airlines and its subsidiaries, the recent surge in airfare prices has become a heavy burden for Sarawakians.
According to him, Sarawak’s Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, also took action and held discussions with AirAsia to address the matter.
āThrough negotiations, AirAsia has agreed to increase flights and will deploy larger A330 aircraft to cope with the peak demand especially during the festive season. It is understood that AirAsiaās ticket prices for flights to Kuching and Kuala Lumpur have also already improved,ā he said.
On Sept 2, Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG) announced the completion of its flight cancellation schedules across all its airlines, including Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Firefly, and AMAL-Hajj and Umrah flights.
On another note, Yii said despite the Federal Minister of Transport (Anthony Loke) being the secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), five of Sarawak DAPās MPs have not taken effective action to address the issue of rising airfare.
However, he said, under the efforts of Gabungan Parti Sarawakās (GPS) component party SUPP, genuine solutions have been found for the issues concerning flight prices and availability.
He further stated that it has been proven that solving problems requires the execution and practical action demonstrated by GPS leaders, not empty talk through the media that ultimately leads to no real results.
āSince its founding, SUPP has been tirelessly working to ensure that Sarawakians benefit from policies that improve their quality of life.
āI believe that the long-term perseverance and efforts of SUPP for the benefit of the people of Sarawak deserve,ā he added. ā DayakDaily
