Management and staff of Family W supermarket from Beladin dan Maludam took part in a fire safety awareness program with Saratok firefighters.

SARATOK, Nov 4: The management of Family W Supermarket from Beladin and Maludam decided to take part in a fire safety awareness programme with the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department today.

Led by Saratok fire station chief PPgB Nazry Mohamat, a group of firefighters taught 22 of the management and staff members on specific steps that can be taken to prevent fires, as well as on how to respond to fire emergencies.

Two employees from a nearby coffee shop in Meludam joined the programme as well.

Praising Family W Supermarket management for the initiative, Nazry said one of the most important tasks that an employee can do regarding fire safety is to have knowledge of an emergency action plan.

“Everyone should be trained and as frequently as necessary to maintain familiarity with the procedures.

“The programme is meant to build awareness of fire safety to lower the risk of a fire incident which can result in the loss of property or worse, lives. It is our hope that this fire safety intervention programme will help keep the community safer,” he added.

All the participants were taught the theory of fire science, practical kitchen fire extinguishing, and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Nazry also said a fire extinguisher is among the most effective ways to put out fires when one can act quickly to douse a newly ignited blaze before it grows into a real threat. -DayakDaily
