SARATOK, Oct 30: A 64-year-old woman lost RM554,525 after being allegedly duped by a man posing as a traditional healer (bomoh).
According to TVS, Saratok District Police Chief DSP Mathew Manggie said that a 38-year-old local man was arrested in Sibu Jaya on Wednesday (Oct 28) following a police report lodged by the victim.
He said investigations revealed that the incident began in June 2025 when the victim and three friends met the suspect at a coffee shop in Sibu Jaya to seek help for her son, who was experiencing health problems.
“The suspect then promised to treat the victim’s son remotely and gave her oil to keep in her bag for protection. The victim claimed her son’s condition showed improvement within a month,” he said.
Mathew said that in October 2025, the suspect contacted the victim again to discuss problems involving her land and offered to help restore it remotely.
The suspect subsequently instructed the victim to transfer money into six different bank accounts belonging to individuals to purchase items for a miring ritual.
“The victim is believed to have suffered total losses of RM554,525 before realising she had been cheated and lodged a police report for further action,” he said.
Police also seized a mobile phone with a SIM card to assist investigations.
The suspect is currently being detained at the Saratok police station lock-up.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
