BAU, July 20: Kampung Segong villagers no longer need to face the risk of flooding and strong currents to cross Sungai Adis Soli as the newly completed 33.5-metre long Bailey Bridge now allows easy passage for vehicles and pedestrians.
The bridge with a load limit of three tonnes was implemented by Public Works Department (JKR) Bau with an approved allocation of RM311,200 under the Malaysia Road Record Information System (Marris) fund.
According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), construction of the project started on Nov 24, 2020 and was fully completed on July 1 this year.
The bridge is now open for public use following the handing over of the project by the contractor to JKR Bau in a brief symbolic ceremony yesterday (July 19).
Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep expressed satisfaction with the completion of the bridge project which will benefit the local community.
Kampung Segong village chief Amy Munga said that the bridge will ease and provide convenience for residents to travel to and from the Pi’muung Singai areas for farming.
“Due to the urgent need for a connecting road to the area, this project has been realised by the Sarawak government through efforts from our elected representative.
“Moreover, villagers will no longer have to face flood risk including strong currents during any heavy downpour to cross the river,” he added.
Bau District Office administrative officer Eddy Nayoi, JKR Kuching Project Supervising Officer Sharil Matnor and JKR Bau District engineer Sandra Jujane were among those present at the ceremony. — DayakDaily
