Sultan Selangor proclaims rebranding of UPM Bintulu campus as Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak

KUCHING, June 30: The Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) campus in Bintulu has officially been rebranded as Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS), marking a new milestone in higher education and regional development in Sarawak.

The rebranding was proclaimed by His Royal Highness Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who also serves as UPM Chancellor, during a royal ceremony at Istana Alam Shah in Klang today.

He was accompanied by Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.

In his royal address, Sultan Sharafuddin emphasised that the Bintulu campus has not only established itself as a centre of excellence in agriculture, forestry, and food security, but also as a catalyst for national development, particularly in Sarawak.

“The UPM Bintulu Campus is poised to become a competitive educational institution in the Borneo region and on the international stage,” he said, according to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report.

The Sultan also expressed his deep gratitude to the Head of State of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, for their continued support and confidence in UPM Bintulu, in line with Sarawak’s Vision 2030 to become a developed state.

“With great pleasure, I hereby declare that Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus is rebranded as Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS),” he proclaimed.

He further expressed hope that UPM would continue its efforts to nurture talents and expertise that can contribute to Malaysia’s socio-economic advancement, especially in Sarawak, through the implementation of UPM’s Food Security Blueprint.

The historic ceremony was attended by Wan Junaidi and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Abang Johari, Higher Education Minister Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, and Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, among others. — DayakDaily
