Sukma 2024: Wushu athlete Carmen Chaw wins silver to bring Sarawak’s medal tally to 2

KUCHING, Aug 14: Sarawak wushu athlete Carmen Chaw Jia Min won a silver medal in the women’s taijijian event at Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 this morning.

The 17-year-old scored 9.530 points during the event which took place at the SSC Wushu Hall, Petra Jaya here.

The gold medal went to Selangor’s Mandy Cebelle Chen who scored 9.603 points while the Federal Territory’s Kwan Yong Xin clinched bronze with 9.490 points.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Chaw expressed her gratitude to her coaches and everyone who supported her.

“It’s my second time participating in Sukma but this is my first medal in the Games.

“I did not expect to win this. My target was just to do my best and showcase everything that I have learnt through these past years,” she said.

Chaw is scheduled to participate in the women’s taijiquan event tomorrow.

Her win secured Sarawak’s second medal for the day after fellow wushu athlete Fung Tai Leong won bronze in the men’s nanquan event in the same day.

The gold medal went to Melaka athlete Bryan Ti Kai Jie while Perak’s Foo Mun Fei clinched silver.

Meanwhile, in the women’s nanquan event, Melaka’s Tan Pei Ler won gold, followed by Johor’s Eunice Pang Wei En (silver) and Penang’s Gillian Ong Ying Sze (bronze).

As at the time of writing, Sarawak’s medal tally stands at two.

Wushu, a sport that combines elements of martial arts and aesthetics is offering a total of 28 gold medals this Sukma.

Three more categories, namely women’s changquan, men’s changquan and men’s taijijian, will be contested this evening. — DayakDaily
