Sukma 2024: Sarawak’s taekwondo squad contributes 3 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze

KUCHING, Aug 16: The first day of the taekwondo event at the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024 ended with Sarawak bagging two gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

The first two gold medals were secured in the men’s poomsae and women’s poomsae categories which took place at the Indoor Stadium, Petra Jaya here this morning.

In the afternoon, 19-year-old athlete Randy Owen Augustine Linggi scored 7.80 points in the men’s individual event, securing a gold medal.

He beat Perlis’s Yeap Zhi Bin (7.71 points) who won the silver medal, followed by Johor’s Woo Jun Yi (7.71 points) and Perak’s Cheong Qi Yap (7.52 points) who settled for joint bronze.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Willemien Lai Lini won the bronze medal for the women’s individual event with a score of 7.93 points.

She shared the bronze medal with Federal Territories’ Zoey Fum Kah Mun who scored 7.67 points.

The gold medal went to Perlis’s Zin Wong who scored 8.25 points while Penang’s Mei Yee Yow earned silver with 7.93 points.

For the mixed pair category, duo Randy Owen and Seah Jing Ying secured a silver medal with 7.97 points.

The gold medal went to the Perlis team with 8.34 points while Penang (7.79 points) and Federal Territories (7.66 points) were awarded joint bronze.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli presented the medals to the winners at the venue today.

Twenty more categories will be contested over the next four days until Aug 20.

Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation) Datu Hii Chang Kee who is also the chief executive officer of Sukma 2024 and Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF) president Azizul Annuar Adenan. — DayakDaily
