KUCHING, June 23: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan urges the Dangsanak (Limbang and Lawas Malay) community to emulate the Foochows for the community to be able to move forward alongside other communities in the state.
He said the Foochows are known to help one another to ensure that their community is always moving forward to be able to compete with other communities as well as to achieve wealth and success as a whole.
“The Chinese community, particularly the Foochows, have that attitude where the successful ones will help the less successful ones for the benefit of the community as a whole. This is what we want.
“We should not practice the crab mentality, where when we see others (in our community) about to achieve success, we will pull them down because of jealousy.
“We are a minority. Therefore it is important that we support one another so that we can move forward on par with other communities in the state,” urged Awang Tengah.
He said this during the Dangsanak Limbang Kuching Welfare Association Hari Raya Aidilfitri luncheon at the Penview Convention Centre here this afternoon.
Awang Tengah also advised the Dangsanak community to embrace the modern way of earning a living through entrepreneurship and industrialisation, apart from participating in the existing state development agenda in agriculture.
To achieve that, he stressed that education is crucial and called upon the younger members of the Dangsana community to strive to gain knowledge and education any way they can.
Meanwhile, the association chairman Mahmud Mohamad Nor in his opening remarks requested the state government to view the association’s proposal to set up a special village for the Dangsanak people arriving from Limbang and Lawas here in Kuching.
On that, Awang Tengah later told reporters that he has yet to receive the proposal but acknowledged the request. He said he will look through the proposal and bring it up to the state government as soon as possible. — DayakDaily
