KUCHING, March 14: Police are investigating an alleged bullying incident involving a secondary school student at a school in the Padawan district after a report was lodged by the victim’s mother.

Padawan District Police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi confirmed that police have opened an investigation and that the student suspected of carrying out the assault has been called in to assist with the probe.

“The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation,” he told press members when contacted today.

According to a local Chinese daily citing a post shared by the mother on social media, the incident allegedly occurred around 1pm on March 11 when her son was in the school hall waiting for a badminton selection session.

She claimed an unfamiliar student approached her son, caused him to fall and punched his head, chest and arms repeatedly while other students looked on.

The mother further alleged that both students were later called by a discipline teacher to explain what had happened.

She claimed the discipline teacher then caned both of them, made them write a statement admitting fault, and punished them by making them pull weeds, after which the matter was treated as resolved.

The mother said she only learned about the alleged assault the following day from her elder son before rushing to the school to seek an explanation.

Unsatisfied with the school’s response, she later took her son to lodge a police report and brought him to the hospital for medical checks, including X-ray and CT scans.
