The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in an advisory issued on its social media, has raised concerns over the safety of beach or coastal and offshore operations, including shipping and oil rig activities, urging all involved to exercise extreme caution during this period.

The strong winds and turbulent seas pose significant risks to vessels and offshore structures, with rough conditions expected to persist across the region.

In addition to the third-category warning for Sarawak, MetMalaysia has issued a first-category warning for the waters of Eastern Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Western Sabah, and Labuan, where winds of 40 to 50 km/h and waves of up to 3.5 metres are expected.

This condition is deemed hazardous for small boats, sea recreations, and water sports.

For the shipping sector, a third category warning remains in effect for the waters of Condore, North Bunguran, Reef North, Reef South, and Layang-Layang, with northeasterly winds exceeding 60 km/h and waves reaching over 4.5 metres.

This is a critical alert for all maritime activities and offshore operations, including oil rig workers.

Meanwhile, a second category warning has been issued for the waters of Eastern Samui, Tioman, Southern Bunguran, Labuan, and Palawan, with winds ranging from 50-60 km/h and waves reaching up to 4.5 metres.

This warning highlights the risks for shipping, fishing, and ferry services in these regions.

MetMalaysia continues to monitor these conditions closely and urges all maritime and coastal operators to prioritise safety and heed the warning. —DayakDaily
