KUCHING, July 5: A rabies-positive case involving a stray dog has been reported near a plantation area in Sungai Sebutin of Tubau, Sebauh, earlier this week.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the case, which occurred in Bintulu Division, resulted from a dog bite incident and was later confirmed through laboratory testing to be rabies-positive.

ā€œWe hope everyone will continue to stay alert, especially in areas where stray dog activity is prevalent,ā€ he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook livestream from Vienna, Austria, today.

Wee also highlighted rising concerns among young children over the presence of stray dogs in public spaces.

ā€œLast week, when we engaged with the young members of the MBKS Children’s Council, they shared about 13 to 15 issues that worry them. One of their key concerns was the fear of stray dogs,ā€ he revealed.

He pointed out that MBKS is working closely with the Children’s Council to prioritise these concerns and explore appropriate solutions that address both public safety and awareness.

ā€œThese young councillors aren’t just voicing concerns, they are offering valid, thoughtful feedback that reflects the real issues facing our community. We want to empower them to share their perspectives and the challenges they encounter,ā€ he added.

Wee stressed that the input from the Children’s Council plays a valuable role in helping the local authority monitor and respond to the rabies threat more effectively within Kuching city. — DayakDaily
