KUCHING, Feb 3: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has warned of the possibility of a fatal road crash occurring due to speeding in front of the Rajah Charles Brooke Memorial Hospital (RCBM), Jalan Puncak Borneo here.

He livestreamed his visit to the site today together with Heritage Society of RCBM Hospital (HSoRCBMH) president Angie Jong to exchange views on the potential hazards and challenges faced by motorists along the route on a daily basis.

It must be noted that there is a new carpark constructed across the RCBM Hospital which is a project initiated by the HSoRCBMH with the support of Lo and the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).

Additionally, JKR has also placed a zebra crossing to facilitate pedestrians who have parked their vehicles across the road.

However, even during Lo and Jong’s visit to the carpark today, cars and heavy vehicles can be seen driving at an alarming speed, especially those who are coming down the slope from Kuching heading towards Puncak Borneo.

This has prompted Lo to call on motorists, especially those passing through the route, to slow down and not pose a danger to the hospital visitors.

At the same time, Jong disclosed that despite already providing the public with ample parking space, there are still errant drivers who stubbornly park their vehicles by the main road which hinders the view of drivers who are exiting the RCBM Hospital.

This irresponsible behaviour has since led to countless accidents at the site.

She also pointed out that the new carpark is only accessible for drivers coming down to RCBM Hospital from Kuching, while drivers coming from the direction of Puncak Borneo are not allowed to turn right into the carpark, as a double line has been painted.

Additionally, she said there is even a warning sign erected there to emphasise the rule, but many drivers chose to ignore it.

She also reminded the general public to keep the carpark clean and not turn it into a dumpsite as there is no specific fund for the maintenance of the carpark. — DayakDaily
