SIBU, July 20: The legendary chef, 84-year-old Kiu Chiong Loi, continues to delight diners with his renowned dian bian hu despite officially retiring on May 22 this year (2024).
Retirement has not kept this dian bian hu master away as this afternoon, he was seen lovingly preparing the beloved dish at Treasure Land Sibu, much to the pleasure of the store’s patrons.
Treasure Land’s operator, 50-year-old Kiu Kwong Chie, who is also the son of Chiong Loi, shared with DayakDaily that his father frequently lends a hand at the store.
“My father (Chiong Loi) would help in the preparation because making dian bian hu is a lengthy process that takes a lot of time,” said Kwong Chie.
Seeing the legendary dian bian hu maker still bustling around the kitchen brings forth a deep sense of nostalgia and comfort, especially for the regulars of Chop Hing Huong and those who have grown up savouring Chiong Loi’s dian bian hu.
