KUCHING, Aug 13: The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has made history as the first Malaysian entity to win a Cannes Corporate Media & TV Award, taking home the coveted Black Dolphin for its Gateway to Sarawak’s Guinness World Record feat.
The award was conferred for Gateway to Sarawak Guinness World Record, a short film chronicling STB’s successful attempt to cover the length and breadth of Sarawak on Borneo through a successive drone relay.
The record-breaking journey covered 1,707km and was transformed into a cinematic showcase of Sarawak’s landscapes, communities, people and diverse cultures.
The film premiered in Kuching during last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and has now earned international recognition from the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards, which celebrates excellence in corporate filmmaking and visual communication.
According to a media release today, STB said the win marks a double first for Malaysia.
STB is the first Malaysian organisation to receive a Cannes Corporate Media & TV Award in any category, while Kuala Lumpur-based ISC International, which produced the film, is the first Malaysian agency to secure the award on behalf of a client.
The production was undertaken for STB and the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, under which the tourism board operates.
The Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards’ international jury comprises around 100 experts from the fields of film, marketing and communications, who assess entries for excellence in production arts and crafts.
ISC International is a specialist brand agency focused on airlines, hospitality and destinations. The agency was also behind the creation and production of the “Malaysia, Truly Asia” brand for Tourism Malaysia 27 years ago.
The latest honour comes as the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards enters its 17th edition this year, further placing Sarawak’s destination storytelling on an international stage.
The awards ceremony will be held in Cannes, France, on Sept 23 and 24, where ISC International is scheduled to officially receive the Black Dolphin statuette.
The recognition also adds an international accolade to STB’s efforts to use film and innovative storytelling to promote Sarawak as a tourism destination, with the Guinness World Record project combining a technological feat with a visual portrait of the State and its people. — DayakDaily
