KUCHING, Aug 13: Seven major roads around Kuching city centre will be closed in stages on Aug 15 to make way for the Islamic Information Centre’s Cares@Peace: Harmony Walk 2026 at the Kuching Waterfront, from 6am to 10am.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the event is expected to attract about 3,000 participants.
“Road closures and diversions will begin at around 6am to ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the programme,” he said in a statement today.
The affected roads are Jalan Haji Taha towards Jalan Market; Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg from the RTM traffic lights towards Padang Merdeka; Jalan Barrack towards Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang near the Central Police Station; the route from the St Mary traffic lights towards Jalan McDougall; Jalan Temple in front of Tua Pek Kong Temple; Jalan Old Court House; and Jalan Main Bazaar towards Jalan Lebuh Wayang.
Alexson said alternative routes would be available to ease traffic congestion.
Vehicles from Jalan Tabuan heading from Jalan Simpang Tiga are advised to use Jalan Central Timur or Jalan Ban Hock, while motorists from Jalan Haji Taha should make a U-turn at the Divisional Mosque roundabout.
Meanwhile, vehicles from Jalan Padungan are advised to use Jalan Abell or Jalan Borneo to avoid congestion along Jalan Temple.
Members of the public and participants are also advised to park at designated areas, including Medan Pelita, Plaza Aurora, Plaza Merdeka, Hikmah Exchange, Kompleks Islam Sarawak and the Borneo Cultures Museum car park.
Alexson urged the public not to park along road shoulders and advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays. – DayakDaily
