KUCHING, Oct 25: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says a suitable location is currently being sought for the construction of a building to serve as a dormitory for Sarawakian students studying in West Malaysia.
The Premier said this during the ‘Sesi Berambeh Anak Sarawak’ event today at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Bangi, Selangor, which was streamed live via Sarawak Public Communications Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook page.
“I was asked the same question last year during a Lan Berambeh session about how Sarawakian students at some universities have a difficult time finding a place to live, and even if they do, it’s expensive in terms of rental.
“So when I returned, I gave the order to look for a suitable location in Kuala Lumpur that is close to the city’s public universities, such as UKM and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), among others.
“Sarawakian students from the universities there can live in one building, which will be built by the Sarawak government, and we are currently in the process of identifying the best location,” he said.
Abang Johari further stated that when identifying a suitable location, it is important to consider proximity to public transport such as LRT trains. This ensures that students do not have to incur high travel costs.
The event was attended by various dignitaries and officials, including Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Sarawak Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, UKM chairman Professor Emeritus Dato Dr Mohamad Abd Razak, UKM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman, and Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datu Misnu Taha. — DayakDaily
