SIBU, April 14: An outdoor screening of popular Malaysian sports film ‘Ola Bola’ will take place at 7pm on April 23 at the town square, which is touted to be the first outdoor cinema in the State.
The event is organised by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu in collaboration with SUPP Bukit Assek and PBB Nangka Service Centres and Sibu Municipal Council.
Speaking at a press conference today, organising chairperson, Grace Kho said the show will help foster unity and harmony among the attendees.
“We are organising this event on April 23, during this Ramadan season where all races can come together to witness the glory of the national football team who had qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics as depicted in the film,” she said.
Prior to the show, about 10,000 Muslims and non-Muslims will converge at 5.30pm at the venue for the ‘Jom Berambeh” event in a mass breaking of fast.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, who is the main sponsor of the event said it is held under the ‘Hyper Youth’ programme which was initiated by him.
“It is good that we can celebrate the breaking of fast together and later continue with the open air cinema. This shows that Sarawak is the best model for racial harmony,” he said.
Chieng added that they are planning to organise this outdoor cinema once every two months.
The other activity is titled ‘The Stage’, which will showcase local talent on May 27 and 28 at the Rejang Esplanade.
“Under The Stage, we are providing a platform for the youths here to showcase their talent. They can either perform Iban, Malay, Melanau or Chinese cultural dances,” he said.
Also present at the event was JCI Sibu president, Christina Pet. — DayakDaily
