Sparse traffic and empty malls in Kuching as most residents stay home

KUCHING, March 18: Traffic in Kuching city was sparse on the first day of the restricted movement order which was imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19.

A cursory drive around town suggested that except for establishments offering food, drinks, health food and medicine, all shops in town have closed.

The usual foot traffic is also nowhere to be seen. This suggests that the majority of Kuchingites understood the order and are staying home, in compliance with the order.

Two popular malls here had their main entrances closed, leaving only the entrance to their supermarkets open. Even for parking, there was only one parking entrance opened to the public.

However, it appeared there are those who still are seemingly taking things lightly.

At one of the malls, a few youngsters were seen milling outside of the premises and having a fun time socialising.

At Kenyalang Park, three men were still seen hanging out in conversation at an open space behind Kenyalang Theatre building.

This comes after Kuching City South Commission (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Peng’s visit there earlier today to inform the public to stay home and not congregate in coffeeshops. — DayakDaily
