KUCHING, July 21:  Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg says the Spaoh Airport in Betong will begin construction next year.

He said with the implementation of the coastal road and the Spaoh Airport in Betong, he had the confidence that the economic activities with the area will grow.

“The Sarawak Government has been building and providing many rural infrastructure facilities in various part of Sarawak, including Saribas.

“These infrastructure facilities are in place so that the people can develop their land.

“With the Spaoh Airport, agricultural produce can be shipped out,” said Abang Johari during the Charity Dinner of Persatuan Warga Islam Saribas (PERWARIS) held here last night.

The proposal to build an airport at Spaoh, Betong was approved by Abang Johari during his visit to Rumah Penom, Ulu Paku in March.

The airport is to meet the need of Bukit Sadok Agropolitan which requires air transportation for it to be developed as an export-based rural economy centre.

It also serves the need to transport the agriculture produce to outside Sarawak.

The Spaoh Airport which is in the southern region of Sarawak is one of the three airports that the Sarawak government is planning to build or extend to boost rural development in various parts of Sarawak.

The other two airports are the extension of the Lawas Airport (northern region) and a new airport at Tunoh, Kapit (central region). — DayakDaily
