SPA urges Sarawakian industrial, construction sectors to buy ‘made in Sarawak’ products first

Datuk John Lau Pang Heng

KUCHING, Sept 8: The Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) is calling on Sarawakian industrial and construction sectors to buy Sarawak products first.

SPA chairman Datuk John Lau in a statement opined that it was unbecoming for Sarawakian companies, government-linked companies (GLCs) and industries not to use products made in Sarawak, instead importing from the Peninsula or Sabah.

“Sarawak has a unique culture and SPA calls upon the industries and construction sectors to use Sarawak products first.

“Only when we do not have locally produced products, (then do) we import from West Malaysia and Sabah,”
he said.

According to Lau, Sarawak produces steel products, cables, cement, pepper, timber, locally assembled furniture, cooking oil and rubber to name a few, and many Sarawak manufacturers have ISO certification.

“It means our products meet international standards. It is disheartening to learn from a few manufacturers that (local) industries and construction sectors prefer to import steel products from outside Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
