KUCHING, May 7: Northern Sarawak is expected to experience heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms beginning May 10 as the Southwest Monsoon sets in, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) announced today.

According to a media statement issued by MetMalaysia, the Southwest Monsoon will last until Sept 2025 and is characterised by consistent wind patterns blowing from the southwest across the country. During this monsoon season, humidity levels are generally low, resulting in reduced cloud formation and fewer rainy days across most areas.

Despite this, isolated heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms may still occur, especially in the western parts of Peninsular Malaysia, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah. These weather events are often associated with the formation of squall lines — rows of thunderstorms that can last for several hours and usually occur in the early morning.

MetMalaysia also warned that the peak period of the monsoon, from July to September, may see the occurrence of transboundary haze, particularly if open burning is not controlled. The public is urged to avoid open burning during this time to minimise haze-related disasters and air pollution.

The public is encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather information via the official MetMalaysia website, myCuaca mobile app, and its social media platforms. For further enquiries, the department’s hotline at 1-300-22-1638 is also available. — DayakDaily
