MIRI, July 12: Former Miri Mayor Datuk Lawrence Lai Yew Son today claimed that some people are out to smear his name, by accusing him of joining Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), thus closing the door for his candidacy for Pujut seat this coming State polls.
“I am still with SUPP (Sarawak United Peoples’ Party) and has been with the party for the past 30 years, until today, and that I have not join any other political parties,” Lai opined when contacted today.
On the matter (Pujut seat), Lai who is also a senior lawyer said, he will leave it to SUPP to decide on his candidacy.
“They claimed that I have joined Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh’s party (PSB), and because of that they cannot consider me as Pujut candidate for SUPP this coming State election, why you have to smear my name in such a manner?,” he pointed out.
According to Lai, those allegations were possibly made by people from his own party.
“All these while I was just kept to myself in silence, because I don’t want a war in the media over this matter, but this is too much, people are just twisting around the matter,” he claimed.
On July 2, Pujut SUPP branch in a local English daily had reportedly insisted that only a member of the branch can contest in Pujut.
The daily was quoted as saying that Lai did not understand the needs of Pujut voters, adding that Lai is a Piasau branch member.-DayakDaily
