New Covid-19 cluster identified in Kuching

KUCHING, July 12: Sarawak today identified the emergence of a new cluster of Covid-19 patients following two confirmed cases linked to an engineering consultancy company in Kuching.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) disclosed in a press statement today, that the cluster was first detected on July 7 when the 575th Covid-19 patient in the state was confirmed positive for the illness.


The patient was a local woman who worked as a draughtswoman in the engineering consultancy company.

On July 7, she went to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for asthma treatment because she was experiencing coughing and asthmatic symptoms.

After she was examined at the hospital, she was admitted for the Covid-19 test besides being treated for her asthma.

Following this, 15 persons in close contact with her, including her family members and colleagues on the same floor were called in to undergo Covid-19 swab tests.

Results for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests conducted on her family members and nine out of 10 colleagues were negative. The 10th colleague’s test result which were released today came back positive. He was subsequently identified as the state’s 579th Covid-19 case.

SDMC gave assurance that contact tracing was in progress for all staff members of the engineering consultancy company and their family members. ā€” DayakDaily
