KUCHING, Aug 28: A soldier was handed a three-year prison sentence by the Sessions Court here for committing an act of property betrayal against his mother’s residence, resulting in a RM400 loss last July.
Milan Andrian, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 436 of the Penal Code, read by an interpreter before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.
He was charged with setting fire to several books, smashing a glass window, and burning the curtains in his 48-year-old mother’s residence at Taman Desa Sejijak, Matang, at approximately 1.05am on July 21.
If found guilty, he faced imprisonment of up to 20 years and may be subjected to a fine.
Based on the facts of the case, during the incident, the complainant, who is the mother of the accused, was informed by a neighbour that her son was seen near a window holding burning paper, which he then used to set the curtains on fire.
A police report was subsequently filed by the complainant, leading to the accused’s arrest a few minutes after the incident was reported.
Upon returning home, the complainant found that the fire had been extinguished by her neighbour.
Upon inspection, the complainant discovered that several books had been burned, the glass window shattered, and the house curtains burned, estimating a loss of around RM400.
It is understood that before the incident, the accused had been berating his mother.
