Social gatherings spark new clusters in longhouses in Julau and Meradong

KUCHING, June 15: Two social gatherings, one at a longhouse in Nanga Sejugam in Julau and another at a longhouse in Nanga Strass in Meradong have triggered new clusters of Covid-19 known as the Nanga Sejugam Cluster and Nanga Strass Cluster respectively.

The Nanga Sejugam Cluster and the Nanga Strass Cluster were among five new clusters of Covid-19 identified by Sarawak Health Department.

According to a report from Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the Nanga Strass Cluster is a community cluster of Covid-19 which involved a longhouse placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in Meradong.

To date, a total of 72 villagers from the longhouse have been screened for Covid-19.

Out of that number of people, 29 were tested positive including the index case while 40 were tested negative and three are awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab test.

SDMC said the Covid-19 patients from the longhouse have been admitted to Sarikei Hospital and to the Covid-19 quarantine and low-risk treatment centre (PKRC) for isolation and treatment.

As for the Nanga Sejugam Cluster in Julau, a total of 148 individuals have been screened for coronavirus.

Out of that number of people, 64 were tested positive and the balance of 84 were tested negative.

The Covid-19 patients have also been admitted to Sarikei Hospital and to the Covid-19 quarantine and low-risk treatment centre (PKRC) for isolation and treatment.

The other three new Covid-19 clusters formed are the Jalan Daya Cluster and the Kampung Muara Tebas Cluster both in Kuching and the Dulang Cluster in Subis.

Meanwhile, the State Health Department also declared the ending of two Covid-19 clusters namely the Long Jegan Cluster in Beluru and the Jalan Sultan Tengah Cluster in Kuching.

Following the emergence of five new clusters and the ending of two clusters ended, there are still a total of 86 active clusters of Covid-19 in Sarawak.

Out of the 86 active clusters of Covid-19 in the State, 13 active clusters reported 172 new cases of the coronavirus while the balance of 73 clusters did not report new cases. — DayakDaily
