KUCHING, March 25: The anti-party hopping law will be a reality check on political allegiance for all politicians in Malaysia, says Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
The Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief said the special parliamentary sitting scheduled on April 11 to table and debate on the Anti-Party Hopping Bill would be a milestone for the country.
“The direct impact is that, if our parliamentarians endorse the Bill, it will ink a long term constitutional amendment.
“With this law enacted, an elected representative loses the seat if he or she resigns from the original party, moves to another party or is expelled from the original party,” he said in a statement today.
Viewing party hopping as an unhealthy trend, Snowdan said the practice would defeat the purpose of the people’s mandate and breach the faith of voters.
He said the Bill would also limit the tenure of Prime Minister to only two terms.
“The anti-party hopping law will curb elected representatives from switching allegiances during their term of office.
“This will be a reality check for representatives who are loose in their allegiance and lack principles. This law will curb the menace constitutionally,” said Snowdan. — DayakDaily
