SIBURAN, Feb 26: SMK Serian emerged the overall winner of zone 2 division-level in firefighting (Bomba) cadets competition today.
Held at the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Siburan station, the win earned the school the honour of representing zone 2 at the state-level finals which will be held in Kuching on March 9 to 13 this year.
A total of five schools namely SMK Kota Samarahan, SMK Penrissen, SMK Simunjan No. 1, SMK Sadong Hilir Semera and SMK Serian participated in the competition.
Bomba Sarawak zone 2 chief Azman Julaihi said competition like this can enhance participants’ discipline, dedication, confidence and sense of identity.
“Discipline is very important in building a person, which is why the department created Bomba Cadets for secondary school students. Apart from fostering closer rapport and teamwork among the cadets in carrying out duties, they are also exposed to equipment used by firefighters when on duties,” Azman said at the closing ceremony.
Among the task that these students had to do were dry drill operation, aspec challenge, knots and quizzes.
Meanwhile, SMK Serian Bomba Cadet teacher-in-charge Zachry Nyabe who was clearly overwhelmed with the results said his students deserved the inter division champion trophy because they’ve trained very hard, from day to night.
“I’m so excited and happy. We will practice hard for the state level competition in Kuching. I hope my students will the next level so that they can compete at national level later this year,” Zachry said. —DayakDaily
