BAU, Sept 11: SMK Paku is of significant geological importance, as it is surrounded by mineral formations that date back millions of years.

In recognition of this, the Public Education and Community Involvement Working Group of Sarawak Delta Geopark has proposed the school to be designated as a Geopark Adopted School, aligning with Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) standards.

This initiative was highlighted during the Geotalk Briefing Programme for Sarawak Delta Geopark Adopted Schools, held at SMK Paku on Tuesday (Sept 10), according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) was officially recognised as the 6th National Geopark by the National Geopark Committee on June 20, 2022.

It spans an area of 311,246 hectares, encompassing both land and coastal zones in the districts of Kuching and Bau, as well as the sub-districts of Padawan and Siburan.

The programme serves as an excellent platform to educate the community and youth on the true significance of geoparks to Sarawak.

It aims to positively impact the younger generation by enhancing their understanding of the environment, the geological history of the region, and the preservation of ancestral heritage, presenting these treasures to the global stage.

The programme was attended by representative of Bau District Officer Raymond Jayasurya Jayaseelan, representative of Kuching Division Resident Joseph Liaw and SMK Paku principal Anek Anpok. — DayakDaily
